Lets Meet at the Big Tree

Every childhood that is lived well has a landmark.

Mine was a tree at the top of a hill — enormous, or so it seemed to a child running toward it with the wind moving through her hair, her sister somewhere ahead or behind, the whole afternoon stretching out like an open field. Whether it was an oak or something else entirely no longer matters. What matters is what it was: a meeting place, a home base, the fixed point around which entire worlds of imagination were constructed and dismantled and constructed again.

This painting is a meadow of purple and orange wildflowers beneath a vast, singular tree. It is the memory of imaginary games played for days without end, of a childhood spent entirely outdoors, of a creativity that was born in the open air and has never entirely come inside.

I believe my creativity comes from those days. This painting is my way of returning to them.
