Every great collection deserves a moment of pure joy at its close.
The garden next door had raspberry bushes growing along the fence — a kindness of nature that transformed the boundary between properties into something sweet rather than sharp. Every day after lunch, my parents would send my sister and me there, and we would go willingly, joyfully, as two who had never needed convincing to seek out something beautiful.
The raspberries, I am convinced, were the most delicious in the world. Perhaps they still are.
This painting shows two robins perched on a fence above a raspberry bush — alert, companionable, at ease in their corner of the world. They are my sister and me. Two birds who went everywhere together, who needed only each other and a sunny afternoon and something worth sharing.
Meadows ends here: not in loss or longing, but in sweetness. On a fence. In the sun. Together.
