There are moments of childhood that engage every sense at once — and leave a mark so deep that no amount of time fully covers it.
This painting was born from one such moment: lying on my back in long grass, tilting my face toward the sun, and holding a flower up to shield my eyes. The light came through the petals in a way that was almost unbearable in its beauty — translucent, warm, transforming something ordinary into stained glass. And all around, the scent of flowers and grass and soil rose up in that particular combination that is less a smell than a sensation, less a sensation than a memory waiting to be made.
My mother taught us which plants could be eaten and which should be left alone. She taught us to make dolls from flowers and wreaths for our hair. She gave us the meadow as a classroom, and we graduated in wonder.
This smaller work carries more texture than the others in the collection — the paint itself becomes part of the light, part of the feeling. It is the most intimate of the six.
